Environment Variables

Manage each project's .env values from the IDE: add your own variables, edit system values, and reveal or hide secrets, all injected at build and runtime.

Every project has its own environment variables (its .env file). You can view and manage them from inside the IDE without editing the file by hand. Values are injected at build and runtime and are encrypted at rest.

Opening the editor

In the IDE, open Settings and select the ENV Variables tab. The current variables for the project load automatically.

Adding a variable

  1. Click Add variable
  2. Enter a name (keys are automatically upper-cased, e.g. STRIPE_KEY)
  3. Enter a value
  4. Click Save changes

Variable names must be unique and cannot be empty. Duplicate names (case-insensitive) are rejected when you save.

Variable types

The editor distinguishes three kinds of variables:

TypeRename key?Edit value?Delete?
Custom: variables you addYesYesYes
System: framework defaults such as APP_NAMENoYesNo
Locked: managed by StackMivoNoNoNo

System and locked variables show a lock icon instead of a delete button. Locked variables are greyed out because StackMivo manages them for you (for example, values wired up by an integration).

Showing and hiding secret values

Secret values are masked by default. Click the eye icon at the end of a masked row to reveal or hide the value while you work.

Saving

Click Save changes to write your edits. StackMivo validates that:

  • No variable name is left blank
  • No two variables share the same name

If validation passes, the values are written to the project's .env immediately and picked up by the running app on the next request. If a change doesn't seem to apply, restart the app from the IDE.

Environment variables are per-project. Changing a value here affects only the current project; it does not carry over to other projects you own.
